Tempura was made on the same day we also made Japanese Gyoza. Tempura is something I have made for my Little Chefs however this was the first time they helped make it.  This afternoon of cooking was like musical chairs. Each time I turned around one Little Chef was off playing and another one was at my side wanting to help. First the vegetables and protein were prepared. Cut them in thin slices or “matchstick” size. We used green beans, onion, sweet potato and shrimp. The sweet potato was sliced on the mandolin but proved to be very difficult so those little hands needed some assistance. Next it was time to make the batter. The ingredients were measured out and combined lightly … [Read more…]

Gyoza is a food my Little Chefs know pretty well. They love talking about places they want to go visit. When I was young we would make Gyoza every so often. I remember it taking a LONG time to make. We had many hands in the kitchen helping, but it still took forever. In our old neighborhood our next door neighbor made these as a family and then sold them to help pay for their kids activities. We would buy some which they made and froze so that we could have them whenever we wanted. That is when my Little Chefs first discovered Gyoza. My Little Chefs got together at Grandma and Grandpa’s house to try making these just like I did. The question was could Little Chefs make these with assistance? … [Read more…]

We thought we would mix things up a bit and make a dish that is usually prepared for summer barbeques in the WINTER! And yes, we broke out the BBQ Grill in the winter, with snow on the ground! My Little Chefs thought it was so much fun. We came across this delicious Chicken recipe when a good neighbor of mine brought us dinner one night. Our Chef Dad was out-of-town for work, and she knew that when he is out-of-town, us Chefs take a break from the kitchen and pretty much eat cereal for dinner.  She was thoughtful and assumed we would enjoy a home cooked meal, rather than cereal….and she assumed right!!! It was amazing, and my Little Chefs loved it. So, it became a favorite recipe of … [Read more…]

I remember eating Danish Puff Chops when I was young. My Little Chefs enjoy this meal occasionally at family dinner with Grandma and Grandpa, cousins…the whole gang! I have to admit I have never made these myself. We decided to try this but wanted to add in some of our favorite seasonings. The first part is to season your pork chops. You can use bone in or boneless. We chose to use a boneless chop this time. On a parchment lined pan place all pork chops. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and sage. We used to measure these three ingredients out each time, but then tried it once just sprinkling each ingredient on one at a time and it worked wonderfully. We had one less bowl to wash and … [Read more…]

Five Little Chefs – Chicken and Black Bean Green Enchilada Rice Bake     We thought it would be fun to try some recipes from other blogs. The first recipe we are trying is Chicken and Black Bean Green Enchilada Rice Bake from Picky-Palate. The Little Chefs thought they could do this recipe because it is a simple dump recipe with most everything from a can. I like this recipe because it is common pantry items.   The recipe calls for chicken. I thought it would be interesting to try canned chicken because then it would be a great pantry recipe.  Little Chef D broke up the canned chicken.   She then poured in the green enchilada sauce and the … [Read more…]

Five Little Chefs – Ratatouille    This Ratatouille recipe was chosen because Little Chef C was watching an episode of Restaurant Impossible where this was made. Our only other experience with Ratatouille is the movie by Disney. The ingredients were gathered, except for the herbes de Provence we didn’t find. Luckily, it was an optional ingredient. The eggplant was going to be interesting, we have never had this in our kitchen before!  Next, everything was chopped. This time I let Little Chef C try using a knife. I cut each of them down the middle so they would lay flat for her to cut herself. This worked fairly well for each one. This is her best cutting so far!  … [Read more…]

Little Chef A loves pasta! Lemon Spaghetti by Giada de Laurentiis seemed like a quick meal with not many ingredients.  The pasta cooked by itself, the lemon sauce only needed to be whisked with fresh lemon juice, lemon zest and shredded parmesan cheese. The only thing needed to be cut was the basil. Seems pretty simple, right? That is what I usually think at the beginning as well.  This time it really was the case! The ingredients were gathered. A saucepan with water was put on the stove to heat to boiling.   First Little Chef A seasoned the water with salt, which would in turn season the pasta. Since we have little mouths to feed and the long spaghetti causes … [Read more…]

Five Little Chefs – Coriander and Mustard Seed Crusted Salmon   Today’s recipe was chosen by Little Chef C, Coriander and Mustard Seed Crusted Salmon fromChef Robert Irvine. We watched an episode of his show, Restaurant Impossible, where he was making over a school restaurant. I think because he was working with High School student chefs my Little Chefs were OVERLY excited and enthrawled. Since viewing this episode every time I ask Little Chef D to do something she responds “Yes, Chef!” Its not a quiet response, because Chef Robert explained to the kids when he asks you to do something you need to respond like this, as he yelled “Yes, Chef!” Little Chef D repeats over and over in louder … [Read more…]

Not too long ago we went to a new restaurant. We ordered, sat down, and started eating when Little Chef C said “Mom, did Chef Robert come here?” I had to laugh. “Did he change this place to make it look nice?” I asked. “No, he didn’t come here, this is a new restaurant.” It has only been open for a few months if I remember correctly. It still had a “new” look to it. It was very bright with the lights, the huge windows and the colors were vibrant. No wonder she thought Chef Robert fixed this restaurant! Whenever Little Chef C thinks I’m turning on the television she says “Chef Robert” as a subtle hint for me to turn on Restaurant Impossible.  I’m not sure why she became attached to him and … [Read more…]
