Spending time at the mall is not what I consider to be an enjoyable time with 5 Little Chefs in tow. Trying to keep everyone together and happy while going from store to store has never been fun for me. So if you said, “Let’s go to the mall” I would most likely pass….even if I really needed to get something. The most enjoyable part of the mall is smelling the pretzels. I have always loved that smell and the bite on the outside of the pretzel and the soft inside. I love the salt with a brush of butter after cooking. Yum! We decided to cook something fun one night and chose Soft Pretzels. To bake anything technical we always seem to turn to Alton Brown and this time was no different. I … [Read more…]

We have been having hot 100 degree days lately. When our days are this hot we are constantly drinking anything and everything to stay hydrated. Sometimes we go for a “special drink” or make our own when my Little Chefs work hard weeding or score a goal in the soccer game. Fresh Strawberry Lemonade is a three ingredient recipe quick to whip up when you need something special. I love the use of fresh strawberries, especially from the garden. I always think when our strawberries are ripe we will make so many strawberry recipes (and I do have a list) but then my Little Chefs snack outside and I am not left with enough. Oh well! The grocery store strawberries work just as well. Wash one 16 … [Read more…]

Summer BBQ’s are in full swing!!! And Sunday night dinners, for most families have the traditional post roast and potatoes, not at our house – We prefer STEAK! We have seasoned and prepared our steaks all different ways, some turned out better than others. We wanted to find out for ourselves which way we prefer our stakes. That is when the Steak Challenge: Marinade vs Dry Rub began! The Little Chefs started out with 2 identical steaks – well as close as identical as you can get, they both came from the same cow – and we know that because all our beef came from a quarter of a cow we bought. Little Chef E and Little Chef K where in charge of the marinade steak and Little Chef B was in … [Read more…]

This is one of Chef Dad’s and Chef Grandpa’s favorite kind of cake. That being said, we needed to come up with a really good recipe that would “take the cake” with Chef Grandpa and Chef Dad. This German Chocolate Cake recipe has a rich chocolate cake, with a creamy oh-so-delicious frosting. The trick to this cake, it to make it at least one day before you will be eating, wait…lets not kid ourselves….devouring this cake! This recipe is, and we quote from Chef Grandpa, “the BEST German Chocolate Cake I’ve ever had”. The Little Chefs first mixed up the cake – and yes we did use a cake mix, but made it ohhh sooo much better!! We added a few more ingredients, then poured the cake batter … [Read more…]

Cooking in the dutch oven is something that has been Grandma and Grandpa’s job. Recently we decided to let our Little Chefs help in the process. Today we are sharing Dutch Oven Baked Beans. We were all at their cabin for the weekend and let the Little Chefs each take a turn contributing to the entire menu. It was much easier having one Little Chef help at a time instead of all the Little Chefs in the kitchen doing their task all at the same time. I call this controlled chaos! Or…semi controlled chaos! When cooking with Dutch Ovens it is important to have all your prep work done before you start assembling anything. Little Chef A chopped the onions. Afterward Little Chef C chopped the … [Read more…]

It seems when we grill my Little Chefs are starving! I don’t think it is because it takes longer to cook on a grill but because we are starting to cook later then usual. If we are past our regular dinner time my Little Chefs get a little unpleasant. Instead of making them wait why not make appetizer skewers that can be eaten while everything else is still cooking. The key is to only make enough to for the kids to be happy, not enough to fill them up. We still want them to eat all their dinner! Skewers are always fun to grill. There are so many different ingredients and flavor combinations that work well on skewers. Today we are using peppers, bread and shrimp to make appetizer skewers. … [Read more…]

Summer is here, which means many BBQ’s, family reunions and picnics. In needing a side dish for a family picnic, we decided to make up one of the Little Chefs favorite fruit dips. Our Orange Fruit Dip is so delicious and perfect for picnics on the hot summer days. It is very refreshing, and you can make it up to 2 days ahead of time – which is great when some summer days are all play and no work (including cooking!). This Orange Fruit Dip also is so incredibly easy, the Little Chefs whipped it up in less than 5 minutes!! The Little Chefs first blended the softened cream cheese till nice and smooth. Then they added in the marshmallow creme, which can seem like a very sticky task. However, … [Read more…]

This recipe came from my Grandma. I remember helping her make this popcorn when I was young, and she teaching me how to get the candy coating to “soft ball stage”. I then remember this being the best popcorn ever made. I have never made this popcorn since I was was young, which seems like forever ago. And I was thinking about her the other day, and all the memories I had spending time with her. So I wanted to share a memory I have of my grandma with my Little Chefs, and make with them this Old Fashioned Candied Popcorn. My grandma would always make it pink, but since the 4th of July is right around the corner, I thought we would make Patriotic Old Fashioned Candied Popcorn! The Little … [Read more…]

With school out and Summer is here – We have more time in the mornings to make lots of fun things for breakfast. We LOVE breakfast, and we needed some more ideas to mix things up from the typical pancakes, waffles, and french toast. I asked what the Little Chefs wanted for breakfast, on the first day out of school – and their response – pizza. The Little Chefs were so surprised when I agreed that pizza would be a great idea…..that is Breakfast Pizza. To make our Breakfast Pizza, we just used up items we had in the house, well actually the cabin. When we made this recipe we were up in the mountains at Grandma and Grandpa’s cabin, one of our favorite places to go – spending some much … [Read more…]
