This year for Little Chef Dad’s birthday Little Chef A HAD to make a cake. I convinced her to make her Dad’s favorite birthday dessert, Mississippi Mud. When he was growing up there was an older lady in the neighborhood with the exact same birthday. She would bake Mississippi Mud and bring some to Little Chef Dad wishing him a happy birthday. I remember being newly married and getting taking a message from this lady still wishing him a happy birthday. Somehow one of his siblings was able to obtain this recipe and now I am able to make it. This really is VERY good and rich. It SHOULD only be made once a year. Paula Deen would approve of the amount of butter in this recipe!  … [Read more…]

This easy recipe has always been a hit wherever we have taken these.  The spices are so strong which is why in my opinion makes them great! Over the last few months we have had the great pleasure of bringing these Ginger Snaps to a friend. Our friend has a rare form of cancer and has been amazingly strong while going through very aggressive treatments.  Apparently going through all these treatments has left our friend not being able to taste anything.  It took one bite for our friend to realize she COULD taste it and her family was NOT getting any! (She did share with her family on subsequent cookie delivery days.) These cookies are easy to make. The ingredients are common and probably in … [Read more…]

No Bake Cookies are our all time favorite family favorite cookie! I remember growing up going on a vacation to Grandma’s house and watching her make these cookies. When they were being placed on the wax paper Grandpa always seemed to time it right and come into the kitchen at that time. He took a knife and carefully hit each cookie HE was going to eat to flatten it. I still don’t know why he did that, but apparently he preferred them flat. The first step is to melt the butter, sugar and milk in a saucepan. When it brings to a boil time 60 seconds. This is the most crucial part of the recipe. If you boil it too long the cookies will end up crumbly. If you boil it too short the cookies will … [Read more…]

Next up in our family favorites series is Cinnamon Waffles. We have tried a few waffle recipes. What I love about this one is the cinnamon. If you are ambitious you can separate the egg. Mix the yolk in with the mix then whip the whites and fold in at the end. The waffles are fluffy when you do this, but a lot of times I have hungry kids and omit the extra step. They turn out great either way! A couple years ago I needed to buy a new waffle iron. I love how crispy our waffles turn out with our Cuisinart WMR-CA Round Classic Waffle Maker. The mix is very easy to make. Little Chef C measured out and combined the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, vanilla and cinnamon. After … [Read more…]

Five Little Chefs – Fuzzy Navel Smoothie   Smoothies are easy for kids to make at any age. Usually they are dump and blend recipes. This Fuzzy Navel Smoothie is no different. The Little Chefs each took a turn to dump in the ingredients. No measuring was required. A little more or a little less of something is just fine.   After it was all blended together it was time to enjoy! This recipe made a lot! We just barely finished it all. Little Chef H loved drinking a little then pulling the straw out of the cup and dripping it on the counter just to be told to put it back in the cup and start the process all over again!   For some reason the Little Chefs did not think it would be … [Read more…]

Today’s post really should be named Questions. What does this do? What does that do? It made me feel not very smart. I didn’t have the answers. I think we need to become Alton Brown students  because he is so good at explaining the purpose of each ingredient. I have made this Too Much Chocolate Cake recipe once before with rave reviews. It is simple because it is made with a boxed cake mix and some extra additions. We were going up to Grandma and Grandpa’s house for family dinner and one of our jobs was to bring dessert. Since it is Little Chef D’s birthday coming up she thought this was HER birthday cake. Kind of, sort of. We do celebrate the birthday’s when we are all together and sing, … [Read more…]

For one night when Little Chef Dad is away for work we usually have breakfast for dinner. This evening Little Chef A wanted to make German Pancakes.  She remembers loving them after making them for the first time with Grandma. Don’t you love how memories are tied together with food! Little Chef A got out the eggs to crack. It is so funny to me that she says, “Oopsy” each time she cracks it open with her thumbs as if she made a mistake! Followed by the much anticipated, “Icky, my hands are getting dirty! I can’t wash my hands until throw away the shells.” The next thing she needed to do was measure out the flour and the milk. She decided to use the same measuring cup for both. I asked her … [Read more…]

Baked Cinnamon Sugar Churros looked like a yummy recipe according to the Little Chefs! I LOVED this recipe because it took about 15 minutes to make! Oh how I wish a lot more recipes could be this quick! We have never worked with puff pastry before but I did know to look for it next to the frozen desserts at the grocery store. It comes as a 2 pack. This recipe only uses one sheet so we have enough for a quick dessert or afternoon snack when we have lots of friends over. Each Little Chef took turns cutting the dough. That was a very simple task for them. Too bad simple doesn’t mean easy because it isn’t easy to cut a straight line!   Little Chef C measured out the sugar and placed … [Read more…]

Five Little Chefs – Seared Rib Eye, Salsa Verde, Dirty Rice   Before starting this recipe Little Chef Dad said, “So what kind of pain and suffering are you doing tonight?” He knows first hand how much patience this requires and how close to breaking I sometimes get. That and the dishes, oh the dishes! How many loads in the dishwasher will we do today is another common question. Little Chef A is very good at drying all the dishes I wash by hand. She sticks with it until they are done which I very much appreciate.   The recipe calls for green tomatoes. When Little Chef C went shopping with me yesterday we could not find them. Instead we bought tomatillos. The Salsa Verde was … [Read more…]

Five Little Chefs – Beef Skewers with Cherry Tomatoes and Parsley Sauce     Little Chef A looked through her Giada At Home cookbook and marked some recipes she wanted to try including Beef Skewers with Cherry Tomatoes and Parsley Sauce. Little Chef C was the one who went shopping with me. She was so excited to mark things off the list when they were put in our cart!  The first ingredient that went into the food processor was the parsley. Little Chef A twisted and pulled it apart. She said it was “easy at first, then harder because it was getting closer to the stem.” The second ingredient was garlic. She LOVES the smell of garlic. I always get a huge reaction from … [Read more…]
