Flag Day is on June 14th so I wanted to read a book with my son about flags and the importance of Our Flag.  I found a Little Golden Book by Carl Memling titled Our Flag.  This is a great book that gives history on the changes of the flags of the USA.  I find this book a great one for kids of all different ages.  The pictures are bright and colorful.  The text is simple and easy to follow.  The explanations on each page are brief, but are still able to tell a lot about the history of Our Flag.  The book starts by giving explanations of why we fly our flag.  Then is tells you how the flag came to about.  It briefly goes into the thirteen colonies, what the original flag’s stripes and stars … [Read more…]

When I was pregnant with our daughter, I had a friend give me the book The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart.  Right away I was caught up in the illustrations by Christine Davenier.  When I got home that night I had to read this book.  It is a longer story which would be great for the older ages.  My daughter, who is now 1, will not sit through the entire reading of this book.  Along with the length, the language is a little harder to understand for the younger ages.  Gerry, “The Very Fairy Princess” needs to make Valentine’s Day cards for her class.  After she makes them, she borrows her dads folder so they won’t get ruined.  The next morning she gets dressed in all her heart clothes … [Read more…]

We have all heard a lot about bullying and the effects it has on children and adults.  I wanted to find a book that would reinforce what bullying is, and what role we play in bullying.  That’s when I found the book Llama Llama and the Bully Goat.  I loved the illustrations in this book along with the great lesson it gives.  It is about a llama and his day at school with a bully who is a goat.  It talks about what to do when someone is bullying you or a friend, and how the teacher handles the bully in the class.  Llama Llama and the Bully Goat has great rhyming through out the book which was a great way to keep the children listening and engaged in the book.  I liked how it showed more than … [Read more…]

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and I have a great book for you to read with your kids. The Night Before Mother’s Day is such a fun book.  This is not the first The Night Before books that we have purchased for our house.  Stay tuned next month for another. During the book, The Night Before Mother’s Day, a dad and kids get Mom out of the house so they can prepare surprises for her for Mother’s Day.  What’s great is that all of these surprises can be done by your kids.  I know this isn’t a great surprise, but why not nudge your husband along, or buy the book for your kids this week!!!  Better yet, share this post with your husband in an email.  He should get the hint. Another fun … [Read more…]

We are excited to be sharing the book The Berenstain Bears Forget Their Manners.  I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel I shouldn’t need to continue to remind my child when to say “thank you” and “please”.  No, I don’t need to remind him every time, but frequently.  And, what about manners at the table, or at a friends house?  This is a great book to read with your children.  We all need a review of what good manners are, and why they are so important. After we read the book we went over a few Questions to discuss about Manners. We had fun making a book out of construction paper.  In this book were used red and green squares to go along with bad and good manners.  This was a … [Read more…]

While at the library my son saw the cover of the book, Pancakes For Supper, and wanted to get it right away. It has a picture of a HUGE stack of pancakes. Pancakes For Supper was a fun book to read.  This is a story about a little girl who gets bumped out of her parents’ wagon.  She flies through the air and lands near a variety of wild animals.  Each one threatens to eat her, however, she offers different items of clothing to each of them.  For example, she offers her blue coat to the bear and her boots to the skunk.  Soon the animals are fighting about who looks the best, and start chasing each other around a maple tree.  She gets her clothes back, finds her parents, and they eat pancakes. … [Read more…]

I’m sure you have all heard of the book I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.  But, have you heard of the book I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie?  When we went to the library to find a couple other books, we ran across this book.  I had not heard of this book before, so I was excited to take this home to read it with my son. I found this great printable to go along with the book I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie.  I wanted to do something a little bit different so we made an Old Lady puppet out of a paper bag.  I enlarged the picture of the Old Lady so it would fit onto our paper bag a little better.  Next I took scissors to cut the mouth of the lady so it would move when … [Read more…]

This weeks we are excited to talk about the book The Gingerbread Man.  This is another classic book that is many of us have grown up reading.  The story is about a woman who wanted to do something nice for her husband because of all the hard work he does around their house and yard.  So, she decided to make a Gingerbread Man cookie.  Once she takes the cookie out of the oven it comes to life and run out of their house.  The cookie runs past different animals telling them “you can’t catch me.  I’m the Gingerbread Man”.  Then he stumbles on a Fox.  This Fox would like to help him over the water, but does The Gingerbread Man make it all the way across the water? We wanted to have some fun … [Read more…]

This weeks book is an all time favorite, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  We fell in love with this book when K was just one.  It is a cute story about a caterpillar who is very hungry and eats all these different things, but gets sick.  In the end only one leaf makes him feel well enough.  It’s always fun to have my kids guess what is going to happen throughout the book.  Have your kids tell you what happens at the end of the book, and then read to see if they were right.  The illustrations in this book are bright and fun to follow for little kids. A few years ago my sister gave K a wonderful present to go along with the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  She made a sock puppet caterpillar … [Read more…]
